Healthy(er) Gluten Free Irish Soda Bread
Here’s a really tasty recipe for vegan, gluten free Irish soda bread. This bread is made mostly with whole grain brown rice flour and almond flour
, so it’s much healthier than other kinds of breads. You may not have some of these ingredients in your pantry, but I’ve included a links so you can buy them online. You can also find them at Sprouts and many grocery stores. This bread was the perfect breakfast for St. Patrick’s Day!!!
This recipe was inspired by one of our favorite cookbooks, Gluten-Free Holiday Baking, by Ellen Brown. This book is a “must have” for gluten free homes!
I (Emily) made this the day before to make a special breakfast for my family. I love Irish Soda Bread, and it’s an annual meal we only have on St. Patricks Day. My mom is sick, so she couldn’t make it, I stepped in, and asked if I could make it. She said yes, and I got to work. It’s much easier than I thought it would be. The next day, I decorated the table with green, put a green bandana on Cody (the dog) so he wouldn’t get pinched, then set up the mini Irish Soda Breads. Everyone loved them! It’s even Javan and JJ approved! (That’s REALLY hard to do)!

Makes 11-12 Muffin Sized Breads
Dry Ingredients
- 2 Cups Brown Rice Flour
- 1/2 Cup Almond Flour
- 1 1/4 Cup Potato Starch
- 2 Tbsp Xylitol
(low carb) or Sugar
- 1 1/2 Tsp Baking Soda
- 1 Tsp Xanthan Gum
- 1/2 Tsp Sea Salt
Wet Ingredients
- Green Food Coloring
- 1 3/4 Cups Vegan Buttermilk (click on the link for a super simple way to make it at home)
Extras
- Coconut Oil Spray
- 1/4 Cup Raisins (for sprinkling)
- 2 Tbsp Xylitol
or Sugar (for sprinkling)
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and spray a muffin tin with coconut oil. Combine all of the dry ingredients in a large bowl and stir them well. Stir in the wet ingredients and stir it until the batter is smooth and green! The amount of food coloring is up to you…make it the color you want it to be.
Scoop the batter into the muffin tin, filling each cavity 3/4 full. Sprinkle the top of the batter with raisins and xylitol or sugar.
Bake the gluten free Irish soda breads for about 20 minutes, until they are light brown on the outside and set in the center. Try not to over bake them. It’s a good idea to check them at 15 minutes, because every oven is different.
Serve with green butter…we combine Earth Balance with honey and green food coloring. Super yummy!!! Enjoy!
